Hey, I just stumbled upon this forum, really cool. I am just figuring out how to use it so I'll apologize if this message is doubled anywhere. I was told by a rafting guide earlier this summer about a toproping area in BV called Rainbow Rock or Rainbow Wall, but I never did get directions, she just said it was close and near the river. If anyone knows about it would you please give me directions and any info, Ican't seem to find it in my guide book. Thanks a bunch, I want to get in some late outdoor climbs before it turns too cold!

It is on private property. That is why it is not in the Arkansas Valley Guide. There are a lot of other great places to climb all year long. Get the guide at the Trailhead or buy it here on this site.

for a little history for you, its called "dorthy rock", not "rainbow wall", or "rainbow rock"....these east coast dumbassess come in and dont know anything and start naming things.
how do i know? well my dad is Matt Beckelhymer, he is friends with the Cogans, the Cogans have been in the area since 1840's...and thats been the name for a long time.
and as far as i know, the south side of the barbwire is owned by mcmurry, and the north side (bouldering) is cogans. so if you go there dont be a inconsiderate ******* and leave trash and broken glass, those same peice of **** east coast yuppies are already ****ing the cogans land up at his "free" gravel pit.

actually, part of Dorthy's is on railroad property and the other is on the McMurry property. The railroad has consitantly asked the sherrif's office to talk to trespassers, but for now they are just keeping an eye on this. If you don't belive me, give them a call and ask them for the scoop. Where you are supposed to park is on Coggin's property, the west (highway side) of the railroad tracks, not at the base of the wall. Keep it clean or lose it all together. Remember, this is someone's land, not public property. And yes us old timers had asked for permissson to trespass. It was low key back then.

The name used in the eighties by the Salida locals was "Rusty Nail". And yes they had permission. BTW, I heard many stories of Cogans strength at picking up heavy objects (like auto engines).
If you've ever climbed at Flagstaff mountain in Boulder you are likely aware of Smith's Overhang. Richard Smith (its namesake) used to climb at Rusty Nail/Dorthy/Rainbow in the eighties as well. He lived in Buena Vista, worked at Climax (geologist) then moved to Idaho. I saw him there a few times climbing in his kuffsteins with added rubber rand.
Dorthy has way more climbing history than many are aware. Lots of Colorado Springs climbers sampled its problems as well BITD.

There are some new developments at the forefront, with the railroad property that includes the North half of Rainbow Rock and the climbing areas being sold and new No Trespassing signs being posted at the access points for the climbs and bouldering traverse in the last month. As I best understand it, a couple from South Park (Hartsel) has purchased the land from the railroad bridge South to the McMurry property and intends to build a lodge or large home there. They are currently negotiating with Union Pacific for crossing rights. Part of their intention is to work with the commercial concerns regarding the climbing, but things are going to change. Until there is more information or a dialog started with the new owners, we all need to respect the new signage and make sure we police ourselves, regarding permission to use this area. I have only met them once, but they seem like good people and sound willing to work with the climbing community.
